I saw this in the theatre as a teen when it came out. Had nightmares for a year about the demons face.

One unsettling aspect is that Father Karras is standing at some sort of expressway entrance, which wouldn't normally be across the street from that subway entrance (or would it?...I've never been to Georgetown!). He seems to be directly across the street, yet when she's going down the stairs, he also seems to be about six blocks away. That happens in dreams a lot, too, for some weird reason.

I always figured Rumsfield was a precursor to Dale Gribble from King of the Hill, except Rumsfield is actually cooler and was a real soldier

0:24. Pause the video. Karras is shown representing a demon himself. His hands represent horns, and behind his head, we can see a devil's tail. His face is contorted in a silent scream, which is, at the same time, representation of anger and despair. Behind him, a highway with two paths, with a warning to stay on the right side. The subway station goes downtown, and his mother dressed in black, representing her obvious damnation. The demon has entered karras's subconscious fact that is masterfully represented with the iconic Pazuzu face's flash. It is possible to find a lot more dark symbolism in this scene, which is, without a doubt, one of the very best of the movie.

I'm assuming by the demon appearing for a split second and his mom going down the subway, they're implying his mother's in hell

I have had many dreams like this one. I dreamt that my father had somehow been absent from our lives for some reason, and that I had gone to Mexico where I ran into him. He was living alone in some little house. I asked him why he had left us. He said he had been pushed away. I felt sooo sad hearing this. I woke up broken hearted. :(
